Artist Statement

I’m a painter whose practice takes elements and memories from my own childhood and adolescence in the 2000s. Working in acrylic, I create paintings based on the TV programmes, characters, video games, comic books and memories of this era. I collate images from screenshots of games and TV programmes from this time, to create imagined environments, storylines, and collages of a lost analogue digital world.

With the advent of smart phones, social media, and new game technology after 2008, I aim to produce a time capsule of the world before. Characters from childhood TV programmes mean a lot nostalgically to me, I place them in new and different situations. I recreate worlds of the past, using images and items to illustrate a throwback to the 2000’s.

My current work is not a celebration of retro video games, it’s about the strange environments and worlds which have now been replaced by hyper realistic graphics and characters. I’ve used the

action-adventure game GTA4 as I like the ‘open world’ where as character, you can explore the strange environments which are viewed today as outdated and crude.

I'am influenced by the work of Jessie Morsberger, Alex Da Corte and Dexter Dalwood whose practices explore memories, real or imagined worlds, childhood adolescence, in order to create collages of history.

As an autistic artist my practice is informed by my lifelong genuine passion for collecting, not only physical objects but also my ongoing special interests in news, film, games, books and characters.
